Aims and Objectives

Major aims and objectives of the Indian Archaeological Society:


  • To publish journals on archaeological interests and to publish special monographs and standard work on various archaeological problems

  • To organize annual archaeological conference and periodical seminars and also the exhibitions of excavated and explored antiquities.

  • To co-operate with different archaeological societies globally and to establish academic and exchange relations with them.

  • To create public awareness to preserve the cultural heritage irrespective of the religious affiliations of the individual monument, sites and works of arts and crafts.

  • Involve schools to not only regularly clean, care and preserve the historical monuments in their neighbourhood but also save them from vandalism of different kinds-smuggling of antiquities, removing paintings, defacing structures etc., so that the country does not depend exclusively on the Government for protection of cultural heritage;

  • Involve ministries and the departments of Education at the Centre as well as States so that in the school buildings the provision for a gallery is made where time to time exhibitions of visual materials concerning cultural and natural heritage could be mounted and film shows and lectures arranged on continuing basis.

  • Arrange proper training of School teachers and other interested persons from all over India on continuing basis in simple scientific methods used in preserving the heritage

  • To preserve and study archival and archaeological materials we have opened in the name of Indraprastha Museum of Art and Archaeology in our building at New Delhi to encourage research in all aspects and all sources of Indian archaeology including epigraphical, numismatic, religious art, architecture, museology etc. on a continuing basis so that the quality of training keeps on upgrading itself.

  • To launch and encourage good publications for research and education.

  • Associate on long-term and continuing basis the governmental, non-governmental and professional organizations which are active in the fields of culture, archaeology and education.
